St. George Marathon

Happy Good Friday Everyone. To me every Friday is GOOD!

So I signed up for the St. George Marathon on October 3rd, 2009. The St. George Marathon has a runners cap for 7200 racers but last year they had 10000 racers register. So there is a lottery. I registered yesterday for the race and the lottery will take place on Friday, May 8th. A list of all successful applicants will be posted online Monday, May 11th. So keep your fingers crossed. I will let everyone know if I am in once I find out.

Here is the link to the St. George Marathon.

My First Race Back

Sorry for the delayed blog about my race, work has really been busy this last week.

Well I had my first race back to running on March 29th. I ran a half marathon on Whidbey Island where my parents live. Crystal, Hunter and I flew up the Washington, and Crystal and Hunter got to experience their first ferry ride. Hunter loved the wind. We had the greatest time with my parents. And the wine was flowing. :)

The race was on Sunday morning but not to early which was nice. The only thing wrong was it was in the 30s, a little colder than I would have liked. I live in Vegas, I have thin blood. As the race started I once again went out to fast, this is a problem that I am trying to work on. I ran the first mile under 6 mins and was less than 19 min for the first 5k. After that is was all down hill from there or really it was up hill. I really started to cramp up around the 4 mile mark in what was a very hilly course. The one thing that kept me going was the fact that my father was driving the whole family around to stops along the course. It seemed that I saw them after every mile or so, it was great. I got to give Hunter high fives along the course, but I’m not sure he knew it was me the first couple of times. Around the turn around, will trying to run down a hill I could see my family ahead. Crystal was taking pictures, mom was holding Hunter and cheering, dad was cheering well until I passed him and then he was running. This is the signature dad move, and my sister would agree. Love you dad. Well I made the turn around and headed off again. I really did not feel that tired but I just could not open up my stride.

As the race went on, my legs did not get much better but I was not going to quit or walk. I turned on the dirt path that led to the finish and gutted it out to a respectable finish.

Here was my finish place and time.

The coolest glasses ever!!!!!!

Ok, so these are the latest addition to my running gear. I ran with them for the first time on Friday and they are fantastic. The cool part about them is I can listen to my ipod with no wires as well as the glasses hook up to my iPhone using blue tooth. So if anyone needs to get a hold of me while I am out running, they can just call and I can hear them through my sun glasses. How cool is that. When a call comes in the music stops and it rings in my ear. I talk on the phone and then once the call has ended the music starts again. I never have to miss a stride. The glasses I got are white like the picture but I got the dark black lens.

The 40 Runner’s Commandments

The 40 Runner’s Commandments
by Joe Kelly
1. Don’t be a whiner. Nobody likes a whiner, not even other whiners.
2. Walking out the door is often the toughest part of a run.
3. Don’t make running your life. Make it part of your life.
4. Keep promises, especially ones made to yourself.
5. The faster you are the less you should talk about your times.
6. Keep a quarter in your pocket. One day you’ll need to call for a ride.
7. Don’t compare yourself to other runners.
8. All runners are equal, some are just faster than others.
9. Keep in mind that the later in the day it gets, the more likely it is that you won’t run.
10. For a change of pace, get driven out and then run back.
11. If it was easy, everybody would be a runner.
12. When standing in starting lines, remind yourself how fortunate you are to be there.
13. Getting out of shape is much easier than getting into shape.
14. A bad day of running still beats a good day at work.
15. Don’t talk about your running injuries. People don’t want to hear about your sore knee or black toe.
16. Don’t always run alone.
17. Don’t always run with people.
18. Approach running as if the quality of your life depended on it.
19. No matter how slow, your run is still faster than someone sitting on a couch.
20. Keep in mind that the harder you run during training, the luckier you’ll get during racing.
21. Races aren’t just for those who can run fast.
22. There are no shortcuts to running excellence.
23. The best runs sometimes come on days when you didn’t feel like running.
24. There is nothing boring about running. There are, however, boring people who run.
25. Distance running is like cod liver oil. At first it makes you feel awful, then it makes you feel better.
26. Never throw away the instructions to your running watch.
27. Don’t try to outrun dogs.
28. Don’t wait for perfect weather. If you do, you won’t run very often.
29. When tempted to stop being a runner, make a list of the reasons you started.
30. Without goals, training has no purpose.
31. Go for broke, but be prepared to be broken.
32. Spend more time running on the roads than sitting on the couch.
33. Make progress in your training, but progress at your own rate.
34. “Winning” means different things to different people.
35. Unless you make your living as a runner, don’t take running too seriously.
36. Never tell a runner that he or she doesn’t look good in tights.
37. Never confuse the Ben-Gay tube with the toothpaste tube.
38. Preventing running injuries is easier than curing them.
39. Running is simple. Don’t make it complicated.
40. Running is always enjoyable. Sometimes, though, the joy doesn’t come until the end of the run.

So here goes

So this is my first blog entry.

I am trying to get back into running and have a bunch of races I want to do this year. Here is a list of the races I hope to complete over the next year.

3/29/09 – Whidbey Island Half Marathon. Race is in Washington State.
6/27/09 – Running w/ the Devil Half Marathon, this race starts at noon (going to be hot)
8/8-9/09 – ET Half Marathon. Race starts at Mid-night.
8/22/09 – Park City, Utah Half Marathon
9/19/09 – Top of the World Marathon. Race is in Utah.
10/4/09 – St. George, Utah Marathon
12/6/09 – Rock and Roll Las Vegas, NV Marathon
2/27/10 – Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile. This race is in Texas and will be my first
Ultramarathon

So hopefully I will be able to complete these races and maybe a few more along the way. I just finished the book Ultramarathon Man, confessions of an all night runner, by Dean Karnazes. This is a great book and a big inspiration. I hope I can become an ultra runner like he has. One though from the book stays in my mind and I don’t think it will ever leave.

“Run when you can, walk if you have to and crawl if you must. Just never give up” Dean’s father.

Runners have great quotes; I guess it is the countless hours of thinking while running.

So I will end this entry with my three favorite quotes.

“To give anything less than your life is to sacrifice the Gift” – Pre

“Every morning in Africa when the sun comes up a lion wakes know he has to out run the slowest gazelle in order to stay alive, at the same time a gazelle wakes know he has to out run the fast lion in order to stay alive, the moral of the story is when the sun comes up your ass better be running.” - Unknown

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today is a gift that is why it is called the present.” - Unknown
